Our artists

Alicia Tolhurst-Brown

Founder of the South Downs Artists initiative, Alicia paints seascapes and landscapes that capture her spirit and imagination, then make their way on to canvas.

Ziza Stupkova

Czech-born, Hailsham-living artist Ziza is a strong colourist and her paintings reveal the beauty around us – Beauty of the ordinary places enhanced by her unique view of them. She loves to challenge viewer’s eye. Painting more what she feels than what she sees, she has developed a distinguished style. Working with oils and using a single-sized palette knife, Ziza never find herself without inspiration.

Gill Bustamante

“My paintings reflect, for me, the spiritual echoes of beautiful places such as those in Sussex and the English countryside generally and it always fascinates me what emerges on to a canvas from a simple memory. All of them have a story attached and are named once I have completed the painting and can see more clearly what the story is!”

Sarah Duffield

“I paint re-imagined, local landscapes, using vibrant colour to express my emotional connection to the world as I experience it.”

Becky “the beachside kiln”

“My kiln-formed glass pieces are expressions of the seasonal changes to the Sussex Downland and coastline where I live. You will always find a local nod in my work, whether it’s references to hidden South Downs copses and rare plants, the open skies over our rolling hills, or the view out to the sea with the Rampion Wind Farm on the horizon. I often exploit the chemistry of glass in my work, using the interplay between heat and metal-bearing glasses to produce unusual greys, blues and earth-tones. “

Stephen Hawkins

Stephen’s work is now highly collectable and sells regularly from galleries across the UK and USA. Traditional, age-old techniques are used for painting individually by the Artist, from hand stretching the linen canvas, or gesso-priming board, through to varnishing the finished picture and hand finishing the frame.  All materials are of the highest quality to ensure longevity, colour fastness and durability.

chris schneider

Chris is very influenced by the countryside of Sussex where she lives. Whether it’s the gentle rolling South Downs or the beaches around Brighton. She loves creating abstracted landscapes of these areas and incorporates the wonderful patterns of fluid art with brush work and mark making. Chris tries to capture the atmosphere of moments, the never-ending skies and sense of space. The majority of Chris’ work is based on landscapes however she also loves creating abstract paintings, playing with colour and shapes.
